Whether you are opening a first boutique or rolling out hangers to twenty stores, the same question comes up: how many hangers do we actually need, and of which types? Order too few and stores fill the gaps with mismatched hangers. Order too many styles and you struggle to reach minimums and keep the look consistent. This guide gives a simple planning method you can use before requesting a quote.

Step 1: Count what hangs, by garment type

Begin with your floor plan or merchandising plan, not with hangers. For each store, list how many garments are displayed on hangers, split by type:

  • Men’s jackets, coats and suits
  • Men’s shirts and tops
  • Women’s jackets and coats
  • Women’s tops, dresses and knitwear
  • Trousers, skirts and shorts
  • Kidswear, if relevant

If you do not have exact numbers, count rails and estimate how many garments each rail holds at your preferred display density. Premium stores usually hang fewer pieces per rail with more space between them; value stores hang more.

Step 2: Add backstock, deliveries and a buffer

Display is only part of the need. Add:

  • Stockroom on hangers: garments kept hanging behind the scenes, ready to replenish the floor.
  • Delivery cycles: if new stock arrives and is hung in store, plan hangers for the busiest delivery period.
  • Replacement buffer: hangers break, go home with customers or move between stores. A spare quantity per style keeps the look consistent until the next order.

Formula: hangers per type = displayed units + backstock on hangers + replacement buffer. Multiply by the number of stores, then add a central reserve for new openings.

Step 3: Reduce to a small set of core styles

A focused hanger range looks more consistent and is easier to buy. Most brands only need three to five styles:

Core styleCoversExample
Men’s top hangerJackets, shirts, knitwearMen’s wooden or men’s acrylic
Women’s top hangerBlouses, dresses, knitwear, jacketsWomen’s wooden or women’s acrylic
Bottoms hangerTrousers, skirts, shortsTrouser & skirt hangers
Heavy-outerwear hanger (optional)Coats, suitsWide-shoulder wooden styles
Kids’ hanger (optional)KidswearKids’ wooden or kids’ acrylic

Use the same hook finish and logo position across all styles so the rail reads as one system. Our guide on measuring hanger size helps you pick the right width for each style.

Step 4: Check quantities against MOQ

Minimum order quantities apply per style, and they depend on how much you customise:

CustomisationMOQ per style
Stock style + your logoFrom 500 pcs
Custom colour or finish3,000-5,000 pcs
New shape (new tooling)5,000-10,000 pcs

If one style falls below the minimum, consider merging it with another (for example one women’s hanger for both tops and light jackets), or starting with a stock shape plus logo and moving to a custom colour once volumes grow.

Step 5: Plan the timeline

Work backwards from the store opening date: shipping time, around 35 days of bulk production after sample approval, and 7-10 days for sampling plus your review. Our step-by-step guide on how to order custom hangers covers each stage.

A worked example

A womenswear brand opening its first store counts 180 tops and dresses, 40 jackets and 60 trousers and skirts on display, plus about half as many again hanging in the stockroom. With a spare quantity added, one store needs roughly 300 top hangers, 70 jacket hangers and 100 bottoms hangers.

Because the jacket quantity is small, the brand uses its main women’s hanger for jackets too, so it needs only two styles: about 370 women’s hangers and 100 bottoms hangers per store. It plans three more openings within a year, so it orders for four stores: around 1,480 women’s hangers and 400 bottoms hangers. The bottoms style is rounded up to the 500 pcs minimum, and the extra 100 are kept as reserve.

The numbers will differ for every brand, but the method stays the same: count, add a buffer, simplify styles, then check against MOQ and timeline.

Retail, hotel or showroom?

Hotels plan by room count and wardrobe type rather than garment counts; see our hotel hangers guide. Showrooms often need fewer, more premium hangers; materials such as walnut or clear acrylic are common there. Compare materials in best wood for hangers and the acrylic hangers buying guide.

Frequently asked questions

How many hangers does a clothing store need?

Start from the number of garments you display on hangers, then add stock for the stockroom, deliveries and replacements. A simple formula is: displayed hanging units + backstock on hangers + a replacement buffer, calculated separately for each hanger type.

How many hanger styles should a brand use?

Most brands work well with three to five core styles: a men’s top hanger, a women’s top hanger, a bottoms hanger, and optionally kids’ and heavy-outerwear styles. Fewer styles make ordering, reordering and meeting MOQs easier.

What is the minimum order for branded hangers?

At HangerForge, stock styles with your logo start from 500 pcs per style. Custom colours start from 3,000-5,000 pcs per style, and new shapes from 5,000-10,000 pcs per style.

How far ahead should I order hangers for a new store?

Allow 7-10 days for sampling, time for your approval, around 35 days for bulk production, plus shipping. Starting two to three months before the opening, plus shipping time, leaves a comfortable buffer.

Should I keep spare hangers?

Yes. Hangers break, leave with customers or get moved between stores. Keeping a spare quantity of each style avoids mixing in off-brand hangers while you wait for a reorder.
